Here is my blog on grounding techniques, there are many out there you just have to find the right one for you, also your kids can join in, here are my boys growing roots and becoming big strong trees :)
Why are grounding techniques important?
Grounding techniques help us become bound with the earth and its energies. Many space cadets like myself tend to fly free unless grounded. Flying free does sound wonderful but when that is coupled with the earths energy your whole being feels at one. If you ever feel dizzy, spacey, forgetful, aimless, sensitive to noise and light it is possible that you are not grounded or "earthed". We all need a stable constant in our lives on every level of being, the earth energy provides this strong backdrop for a healthy spirit.
How often should grounding be practised?
I ground myself as often as possible (again as a space cadet it is advisable) and sometimes many times a day. Others feel grounded by doing the exercise once a day or maybe once a lifetime, it depends on your being and whether you are naturally earthed. The nice part is that the exercises are relaxing and no matter how often you need it, when it is practiced you are doing your spirit good by taking this time out. Also the more you do it the easier it is, I personally use no. 2 and now while doing my every day activities I just shoot an anchor down from my spine and feet and I am done, firmly placed on the earths energy matrix.
When is it particularly important?
Before I do any exercise or try to share healing I always ground myself. I believe that before all spiritual work and contact it is important to have a good base, for me that is Ground + Centre + Protect + Open (the other stages will be in further blogs). Through the years I have tried a few techniques, it is OK to change your technique, keep trying until you find the one that works the best for you.
How to start
Before any of the following grounding techniques, find somewhere you are comfortable, I am not a great believer in sitting crossed legged on the floor, I believe that what suits you is what will work for you. I prefer to be sat either at a desk or on a comfy chair, I then breathe deeply and relax my body.
Not working?
If the above frustrate you, this can be the case when you first begin, do not worry, do not force it, we all find our way and if the above are not right for you there are many things you can do, below is an idea or two for you:

- Close your eyes if you find it better to concentrate and be aware of your feet. Be aware how your feet feel, how they touch the ground and how the contours of your feet feel on the ground. Imagine slowly that roots start growing on the soles of your feet, the roots grow and grow down deep into the earth. Some will feel a tingling in the soles of the feet but don't worry if not (we are all different and experience it differently). Feel your roots take hold, feel them spread and enjoy the feeling that you are connected to the earth. Enjoy this feeling as long as you feel comfortable and practice this meditation as often as possible. You can even imagine it as you are walking around the supermarket or when you are taking the kids to bed!
- Close your eyes if you find it better to concentrate and be aware of your spine. Be aware how your body touches the floor/furniture. Be mindful of your spine, run your minds eye up and down your spine a few times and be aware how it feels. Relax your spine and then imagine your spine extending downwards. Add an anchor to your spine and let it run down into the ground. Imagine your anchor getting a hold of the earth and pulling you down. Once your spine is secured, do the same exercise for both feet, you now have anchors that will keep you grounded wherever you may be.
- Breathing exercise. If you find the above exercises difficult, you can use your breath as a focus for your attention. Breathe deeply into your stomach, feel your stomach rise and fall and for every breath that tries to end in the chest carry it on until your stomach rises. Slow your breathing down and feel your body relax with each breath you take. Find a phrase that works for you to focus on each breath, you can try "I am calm", "I am here", "I am grounded" or a traditional mantra "Om mani padme hum" for example. Find what works for you best and practice breathing and reciting your phrase. You will find that with each practice meditation becomes easier for you and you may try the above again.
Not working?
If the above frustrate you, this can be the case when you first begin, do not worry, do not force it, we all find our way and if the above are not right for you there are many things you can do, below is an idea or two for you:
- Think about a time/place you were really relaxed and happy. Maybe on holiday, sat on the beach, watching the sea roll in and out, in a cafe eating a croissant, sat in your favourite car, at an F1 race (one of my highlights!), watching your kids play (not argue though!) etc. Think of how this time made you feel, think of your surroundings and relax your body. Remember the sounds/sights/tastes etc. feel your body become relaxed as you do. Think of what connection you had to the earth at that moment and remember how it felt.
- Do your gardening :-) If you enjoy gardening, go out there and "be"
- I actually feel grounded while ironing (weird I know), while doing any of your household chores empty your thoughts and think of the moment you are in. What are you doing, how does your body feel, breathe... feel your place right here right now.
- Spend time with your pets, focus on them, their love and their energies.
- Sit in the sun, get your D3 daily portion and feel your relationship with the ground below
- Enjoy your favourite sport, go running (outside not on a machine!!), fly a kite, play football, basketball, yoga ... anything! while you do notice your connection to the earth.
As stated above there are so many ways you can ground, keep trying until you find the right one.... and feel free to comment here on what you find works :)
